SANTA CRUZ, Calif. –Sutter Maternity & Surgery Center of Santa Cruz recently awarded its twelfth annual Primary Care Physician award to Sarah Herrman, a 2018 graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC).

The scholarship is administered by SMSC and the UC Santa Cruz Foundation to help carry out a mission to provide high-quality primary care to Central Coast Medi-Cal patients. Scholarship recipients receive $10,000 to help support their studies at an accredited medical school provided they commit to returning to the Central Coast to practice in primary care after their education is completed.

“Sarah’s passion for ensuring healthcare for all will make her a strong advocate for her patients,” said Trina White, Chief Administrative Officer for SMSC. “In addition, her outstanding academic background, which combines both traditional biology and research in the rapidly developing field of epigenetics, is well suited for a future where medical care will encompass new understandings of how genes and the environment interact to influence health. SMSC is proud to be able to help support her as she enters medical school.”

Herrman, a San Diego native, majored in Human Biology and participated in research in a UCSC epigenetics lab during her junior and senior year, as well as in an international research program in Switzerland during the summer of 2017. She wishes to become a primary care physician as it allows her to combine her passions for biology and advocacy.

“I am incredibly honored to be chosen as this year’s recipient,” Herrman said. “I firmly believe that adequate and affordable healthcare is a right that should be guaranteed to all. In my career as a physician, I hope to address the disparities in medicine that affect access to care for certain groups. This scholarship will help support my medical school education, thus allowing me to focus on gaining the knowledge and resources necessary to work towards these larger goals.”
