New program creates access to doula services for low-income families

Mothers delivering at CPMC’s campuses, including the new Mission Bernal hospital, can request a doula to assist with their delivery thanks to the City’s new program started through a fund set up by Sutter Health.

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco’s President of the Board of Supervisors Malia Cohen today announced the launch of the City’s Doula Program that will provide doula services for low-income families. Sutter Health’s California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) is proud to help fund the program.

The City’s Doula Program is made possible through the San Francisco Foundation’s Community Health Innovation Fund. Not-for-profit Sutter Health set up the fund as part of the development agreement for its two new CPMC hospitals in San Francisco. Mission Bernal Campus hospital opened on Aug. 25, and the Van Ness campus hospital opens in March 2019.

“We work to respect each family’s childbirth choice,” said Shannon Thomas, R.N., site administrator at CPMC Mission Bernal Campus. “CPMC provides access to free doula services for all expecting moms in our community, to ensure this specialized care is available to them during childbirth if they choose it.”

For nearly two years, CPMC has provided access to doula services to parents who may not have the resources to do so otherwise. Doulas often provide assistance in communicating the mother’s needs in a hospital environment. The new Mission Bernal campus offers spacious, private labor and delivery rooms, postpartum units and provides diverse childbirth options, including doulas and midwives, for expecting parents across San Francisco.
