Girl Scout Julisa Solorio delivers baby blankets

MODESTO, Calif.Julisa Solorio was born 13 years ago…about 14 weeks earlier than planned. Now, 13 years later, she is repaying an act of kindness shown her mother during a very trying time.

For her Girl Scouts Silver Award project, Julisa organized a group to assist her in sewing 50 handmade baby blankets. She and her mom recently delivered the baby blankets to Memorial Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and Memorial’s staff were more than happy to accept them.

Julisa was born at 26 weeks and weighed 2 pounds, 3.8 ounces. “We were on vacation in Squaw Valley when contractions started,” said Angelica Solorio, Julisa’s mom. “I was directed to head closer to my doctor because they did not have the facility for such an early delivery.” They got as far as Stockton. “She stayed in the NICU for the first two months of her life, but when she reached four pounds, she was finally discharged to go home with us,” Angelica continued. “That was the happiest day of our lives!”

“I have shared this story with Julisa often, including how I treasure the handmade gown and blanket that was given to her while at the NICU during such a traumatic event for both her and us,” said Angelica. “So, Julisa decided to do the same for the NICU in your hospital. We hope your babies and parents will enjoy them.”

Julisa is a healthy and happy teenager now.  She began in Girl Scouts as a Daisy in first grade, and is now a Cadette.

“We love to hear stories like this, where premature babies grow up and live healthy lives,” said Thelma Camarillo, MMC’s Maternal Child Health Manager. “It reminds all of us of the important work we do as we care for our smallest patients. We thank Julisa and her mom for sharing these wonderful blankets with us, and will remember their contribution to our NICU.”
