John Boyd, PsyD, Sutter Health’s CEO of Mental Health Services, was elected as chair of The Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission (MHSOAC). The Commission oversees the implementation of the Mental Health Services Act and develops strategies to overcome stigma. Additionally, the MHSOAC may advise California Governor Jerry Brown or the state legislature on mental health policy.

Sutter Health is a leader in mental healthcare and is taking strong steps to raise awareness and further educate communities about the importance of mental health. Recently, Sutter teamed up with Mental Health America, a national leader in mental health support, recovery and advocacy, to work together in the development of tools and resources that proactively address mental health concerns before they escalate. Sutter also collaborated with Quartet, a data-driven health technology company, to improve ways of diagnosing and delivering care to residents living with mental health conditions, which are often connected to chronic physical illnesses. Additionally, Sutter began working with One Mind at Work and the Steinberg Institute to transform employer-based approaches aimed at employee wellbeing, reducing business costs and addressing social prejudice.

Boyd has an extensive background in healthcare administration and mental health.  Prior to joining Sutter Health in 2008, he served assistant administrator for Kaiser Permanente Sacramento Medical Center.  He is a board member of National Mental Health America and has also served in other appointed capacities, including City of Sacramento Planning Commissioner. Additionally, he is a Fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Boyd joined The Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission in 2013. He currently serves as vice chair. He will begin his term as chair in January 2018.
