Antioch and Brentwood Children Will Receive a Book at Each Doctor Visit

Susan Adham, M.D.

When Dr. Susan Adham was a little girl growing up in Sunnyvale, she fondly remembered going to the library and reading book after book with her father. So when the Antioch and Brentwood pediatrician learned about a non-profit program called Reach Out and Read that incorporates books into pediatric care and encourages families to read to their children, she jumped at the chance to replicate the program.

Sutter East Bay Medical Foundation pediatricians – practicing at the Antioch care center, located at 4053 Lone Tree Way and the Brentwood care center Brentwood located at 350 John Muir Parkway – will now provide books to children six months to five years of age at the end of each office visit. All children will receive an age appropriate book that they can choose from with their parents.

“Encouraging children to read at an early age promotes healthy brain development and provides a foundation for success,” says Adham. “Several studies have shown that exposing babies and young children to language and reading books in the first few years of their lives is vital in preparing them for kindergarten and beyond.”

“We are inspired by our physicians going above and beyond for their patients by taking that extra step to help reduce the literacy gap to unlock a healthier future for our East Bay communities,” says Jim Hickman, CEO, Better Health East Bay – a Sutter Health philanthropic foundation which provided a charitable gift to fund the program.

Pediatricians are uniquely positioned to help bridge the literacy gap, says Adham, as they are heavily involved with the care of their patients and their families.

“Literacy opens up so many doors in life and encouraging parents to create a daily reading ritual with their infants, toddlers and preschoolers is just as important as promoting good nutrition and other healthy habits,” she says. SEBMF pediatricians and family practice physicians in Albany, Berkeley and Castro Valley will also participate in this program.
