Crescent City – Sutter Coast Hospital’s Brookings Diagnostic Imaging Center is now home to the first 3D mammography in Curry County, Oregon.

The new technology improves the ability of doctors to detect the size, shape and location of cancerous tumors within the breast.

“3D mammography is currently the best cancer screening technology available,” said Wendi Workinger, radiology manager at Sutter Coast Hospital. “For patients, this means early breast cancer detection and a decreased need for additional images and biopsies allowing for a quicker diagnosis, less fake positives and more peace of mind.”

In an effort to expand imaging services to the community, Sutter Coast Hospital purchased and installed the new 3D mammography machine that begins offering screenings in Brookings this week.

“As a community-focused hospital, we are excited to offer this new technology to our patients,” said Mitch Hanna, CEO of Sutter Coast Hospital. “We understand the impact breast cancer can have on a family and believe the state-of-the-art equipment can help provide earlier detection and better health outcomes for our patients.”

The American Cancer Society recommends women begin screenings at age 45. Women 55 and older are recommended to have a breast screening every other year. Women interested in learning more about 3D mammograms should ask their physician about their breast cancer screening options. In addition to 3D mammography, the hospital also expanded women services with new physician, Courtney Ridley, M.D. Dr. Ridley, an OB-GYN, joined the hospital in April and has practiced locally with more than 20 years of experience.
