Sutter Health’s Palo Alto Foundation Medical Group one of six physician organizations across the state to receive a 5-star designation
Six physician organizations connected to not-for-profit Sutter Health received recognition today for providing high-quality care to patients from the Integrated Healthcare Association (IHA), a renowned industry leadership group in California.
Using 13 clinical quality measures, IHA assigned star ratings to 186 physician organizations across the state based on how well they provided care to Medicare Advantage patients in 2015. Measures range from rates of breast exams and colorectal screenings to eye exams and blood sugar control for patients with diabetes.
Sutter Medical Network members honored for achieving a 4.5- or 5-star rating for 2016-17 include the following physician organizations:
5-Star Quality Performer
- Palo Alto Medical Foundation – Palo Alto Foundation Medical Group
4.5-Star Quality Performers
- Palo Alto Medical Foundation – Mills-Peninsula Division / Mills-Peninsula Medical Group
- Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation – Sutter Medical Group of the Redwoods
- Sutter East Bay Medical Foundation – East Bay Physicians Medical Group
- Sutter Gould Medical Foundation – Gould Medical Group
- Sutter Medical Foundation – Sutter Medical Group
Most Improved Performers

- Sutter Gould Medical Foundation – Gould Medical Group
To qualify for Most Improved, physician organizations must improve their rating by at least one-half star from the previous year’s rating.
All ten Sutter Health-aligned physician organizations earned a 3.5-star or above rating by IHA.
“Medical teams across our network continually rethink and improve on how we deliver care and services to best meet our patients’ needs,” said Larry deGhetaldi, M.D., Sutter Health’s quality committee chair. “Recognitions like these validate our ongoing commitment to bring accessible and meaningful care to all those we serve.”
Along with recognizing high-performing physician organizations, IHA partners with the California Office of the Patient Advocate (OPA) to use the physician organization star ratings to report publicly on the quality of care for people enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans. The 2016-17 edition of the OPA Medical Group Medicare Report Card was also released today.
