Waugh will use his extensive experience in what’s known as human-centered design—a practice that relies more on creative approaches to problem solving, and less on conventional methods—to guide Sutter Health’s innovation strategy. Waugh is a passionate proponent of the method, inspiring audiences to channel their inner designer through his Results May Vary podcast and speaking engagements such as his TEDx San Jose’s “Can We Use Design to Make Life More Interesting?

Working with other Sutter Health colleagues, he will refine and expand innovation practices, cultivate new ways to delight patients and families, and improve healthcare delivery processes. Waugh and his team will also serve as the “front door” through which outside innovators can connect and collaborate with Sutter Health in new ways to enhance quality outcomes and the overall patient experience.

“His out-of-the-box thinking and creativity will help Sutter Health as we reimagine healthcare delivery, while remaining rooted in our commitment to create lasting relationships with those in our care,” said Sutter Health’s Chief Strategy Officer Peter Anderson.

Regarded for his ability to bring together those from many multi-disciplinary teams, Waugh brings unique and inventive approaches to benefit Sutter Health’s 3 million patients and further enhance the network’s standing as a provider of high-quality, high-value, personalized care.

Waugh comes to Sutter Health with 10 years of entrepreneurial leadership at IDEO, a globally regarded Bay Area design and innovation consulting firm serving many high-profile companies including Nike, Google, Wal-Mart and the Centers for Disease Control. He also served as vice president of design at One Medical Group in San Francisco, where he helped create a culture of innovation. While there, he and his colleagues launched numerous experiments in the areas of digital health, chronic disease management and integrative health. Prior to his tenure at IDEO, Waugh served as the global marketing manager for Specialized, a major American brand of bicycles and related products based in Morgan Hill, Calif.

Waugh graduated from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo., with bachelor’s degrees in international business and French.
