Stephen Lockhart Named as a Hospital and Health System ‘CMO to Know’
Today, Becker’s Hospital Review released its 2016 list of “100 Hospital and Health System CMOs to Know,” featuring esteemed clinical leaders from healthcare organizations across the nation. The publication selected Sutter Health’s Stephen Lockhart, M.D., Ph.D., chief medical officer, among them.
A respected Sutter Health physician leader for more than a decade, Dr. Lockhart stepped into his role as chief medical officer in January 2015. Dr. Lockhart oversees patient-care quality and safety, research and education for the not-for-profit healthcare network. He brings to his role more than 30 years of healthcare experience and extensive knowledge as an administrator, board-certified anesthesiologist, university professor, published author, and nationally recognized environmentalist and humanitarian.
Outside of his work life, Dr. Lockhart regularly volunteers for humanitarian causes and organizations. In 2010, he organized Sutter Health medical teams to treat victims of the Haiti earthquake and returns to the country yearly as a volunteer with global nonprofit organization Partners in Health. He personally raised money to bring Haitian doctors to Sutter Health-affiliated Samuel Merritt University for advanced surgical training, arranged to install a surgical robot at a rural Haitian hospital and helped establish a Haitian orthopedic residency program. With his wife, Karen, and daughter, Anna, he lived in Chile for six months while volunteering for an organization that provides medical care for children recovering from burns.
