Sutter Health Debuts Spanish in Online Patient Portal
Posted on Oct 14, 2015 in Expanding Access
Patients from across Sutter Health’s not-for-profit network now have the option of viewing key sections of My Health Online, as well as valuable health information and instructions, in Spanish. Through My Health Online, Sutter Health’s secure online patient portal, patients have online and mobile access to their personal health record and an expanding number of online services.
Today, more than 1.2 million adult patients connect to Sutter Health via My Health Online, which is more than 64 percent of the adult patient population across the Sutter Health network. At Sutter Health’s Palo Alto Medical Foundation, where My Health Online was first developed, more than 83 percent of the adult patients use this system. These numbers exceed the national average, with less than 30 percent of Americans reporting online access to their medical records, according to a national study conducted by the California HealthCare Foundation. My Health Online is the patient-facing part of Sutter EHR—one of the most sophisticated and comprehensive electronic health records in the country.
“Communication plays a critical role in delivering high-quality, personalized care. By introducing new language support into My Health Online, we can communicate and connect more effectively with the diverse communities we serve,” said Albert Chan, M.D., M.S., FAAFP, Sutter Health’s chief of digital patient experience and leader of My Health Online.
“Understanding our patients’ preferences helps us better understand and cater to their unique needs,” said Don Wreden, M.D., Sutter Health’s senior vice president of patient experience. “With this newest technological investment for our patients, we’re working to make care more meaningful, convenient and accessible.”
Sutter Health, a not-for-profit network of 5,000 doctors, 24 hospitals, home health and hospice, and other health care service providers throughout Northern California, cares for patients in one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse populations in the United States. In addition to Spanish, Sutter Health will explore additional translations for My Health Online in the near future for the most commonly spoken languages by their patients.
