Clinical collaboration with CVS/pharmacy and MinuteClinic will increase access to care and help improve medication adherence for patients

The not-for-profit Sutter Health network announced a new clinical collaboration with CVS Health today. CVS Health will securely and safely provide prescription and visit information from MinuteClinics, the retail medical clinic of CVS Health, to Sutter Health’s electronic health record (EHR) for Sutter Health patients who seek care through the nearly 1,000 MinuteClinics nationwide, and/or have prescriptions filled at a CVS/pharmacy. Through this collaboration, Sutter Health and MinuteClinic practitioners will also work together on planning strategies around chronic care, wellness and patient care coordination.

Sutter Health, MinuteClinic and CVS/pharmacy will begin to work this summer toward enabling communication between our EHR systems to streamline and enhance communication. CVS Health will securely share prescription and MinuteClinic visit information to Sutter Health clinicians, as well as data on interventions conducted by CVS pharmacists via Sutter EHR only with patient approval.

“Savvy consumers are actively seeking convenient and affordable solutions for their immediate healthcare needs,” said Chief Medical Officer Stephen Lockhart, M.D., Sutter Health. “As a leading provider in Northern California, we want to help ensure that when our patients seek afterhours or other care outside our facilities, they have trustworthy options and their medical records securely travel with them.”

CVS/pharmacy currently has more than 7,800 retail pharmacy locations across the U.S. In addition, there are nearly 1,000 MinuteClinic walk-in medical clinics available at CVS/pharmacy retail stores, including 14 throughout Northern California. MinuteClinic locations are open seven days a week, offering evening hours with no appointment necessary. They accept most health insurance plans. Nurse practitioners and/or physician assistants who provide treatment for common illnesses and administer wellness and prevention services, including health-condition monitoring for patients with chronic diseases, staff the clinics.
