Sutter Health Hospital Receives Nation’s Highest Award for Performance Excellence
Sutter Davis Hospital, part of the not-for-profit Sutter Health network, received the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award—the nation’s highest Presidential honor for performance excellence through innovation, improvement and visionary leadership.
Sutter Davis Hospital is the first organization in the greater Sacramento area and first Northern California hospital to receive the honor. Pewaukee School District in Wisconsin and Baylor Regional Medical Center in Plano, Texas also received awards.
“This milestone award recognizes a five-year journey of focused, collaborative work to continue advancing quality at Sutter Davis Hospital,” said Gordon Hunt M.D., senior vice president and chief medical officer for Sutter Health. “Sutter Davis serves as a role model for hospitals nationwide in providing patients with high-quality care.”
Hunt added, “Typically, it takes twice as long—a full decade—before Baldrige award applicants can demonstrate the caliber of performance to merit this honor. Raising the quality bar this high and sustaining it takes partnership and perseverance by every employee, doctor, nurse and volunteer at the hospital. I congratulate the entire team at Sutter Davis for their dedication.”
“In spite of the struggles that health care finds itself in today, there is great care being delivered every day to every patient at Sutter Davis Hospital,” said Sutter Davis Hospital CEO Janet Wagner. “This recognition from the Baldrige foundation may seem like the end to a long journey; however, it is just a springboard to executing the many innovative ideas and processes that this complex health care environment demands.”
Twenty-two organizations applied for the 2013 Baldrige Award. Each underwent rigorous evaluation by an independent board of examiners in seven areas defined by the Baldrige Criteria: leadership; strategic planning; customer focus; measurement, analysis and knowledge management; workforce focus; operations focus; and results. An organization may compete for the award in one of six categories: manufacturing, service, small business, health care, education and nonprofit (including government agencies).

Thousands of organizations worldwide use the Baldrige Criteria to guide their operations, improve performance and achieve sustainable results. This proven improvement and innovation framework offers organizations an integrated approach to key management areas.
To date, more than 1,500 U.S. organizations have applied for the Baldrige Award. Sutter Davis is one of only 18 health care organizations to receive the Baldrige Award.
